BC Hazmat Management conducts qualitative Fit tests. Don’t know what a fit test is? It’s nothing to do with your health in this case. Why a fit test? Anyone performing a job that requires a type or style of respirator is required to have the respirator properly adjusted or “fit” to their face. This includes; asbestos remediation workers, nurses, lab workers, body shop staff, many industrial employees, some painters, hazmat technicians and many, many more.
Why have a fit test you ask? An improperly fitting respirator can allow contaminants to enter around the edges. Whether this is asbestos dust, chemical fumes or dangerous gases, you are wearing the respirator to protect yourself from those contaminants so why would you want them getting in, bypassing the cartridges or supplied air, due to a mask that isn’t fitting properly.
Fit testing can be done at our facility in Sidney BC or at your company or job-site location.
Here’s an excerpt from WorkSafeBC regulations that cover fit testing:
(2) Fit tests must be performed in accordance with procedures in CSA Standard CAN/CSA-Z94.4-02, Selection, Use, and Care of Respirators.
(2.1) A fit test must be carried out
(a) before initial use of a respirator,
(b) at least once a year,
(c) whenever there is a change in respirator facepiece, including the brand, model, and size, and
(d) whenever changes to the user’s physical condition could affect the respirator fit.
BC Hazmat Management also offers a course called Fit testing – Train the tester.
Do you need to provide a number of internal staff with respirator fit testing? BCHAZMAT Management Ltd. has the training solution. Delivered by our Qualified Instructors, our Fit Testing – Train the tester course will teach you the fundamentals of respirators and how to properly fit test employees.
