Dan Lyons – Hazmat Technician, Responder and soon to be trainer
Dan was a lifeguard, swimming instructor, and CPR level C instructor for approximately 5 years while attending University. Completed business administration at BCIT, worked with the Health Authorities for 5 years as a labour relations and compensation analyst. Went back to University for applied environmental science and technology and is registered with the Applied Science Technologist and Technicians of BC as a Bio-Science Technologist.
Dan worked with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada under Dr. Shabtai’s research group which focused on sustainable farming practices, specifically, greenhouse gas emissions of nitrogenous gasses and particulates, improved water quality by strategic manure use and nutrient sources, and overall nutrient management due to fertilizer and farming practices.
He then went off to the Netherlands in the province of Zeeland working with HZ University and Lamb Weston Meijer, a potato chip company. The project was to develop a way to recycle 70% of Lamb Weston Meijer’s waste effluent into demineralized water for use in the factories gas boilers through reverse osmosis (RO). Furthermore, the project was attempting to remedy the resulting contaminated concentrate due to the Reverse Osmosis. Dan developed a system of a modified Solvay Process first discovered by Farid Benyahia of Qatar University. By physically bubbling the carbon dioxide from the gas boilers of the potato chip plant, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) would precipitate from the concentrated effluent, thus eliminating the contamination of concern prior to discharge into the Estuary.
He grew up in Vancouver, BC playing hockey, golfing, water polo, and skiing. He’s an avid snowshoe, hiker, and golfer. He’s travelled to Australia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Europe, and all over the US.
Dan recently moved to Vancouver Island which has been a dream for several years. He’s a passionate gardener and if not out hiking with his wife and dog, you will find him in his home workshop or garden.
