The Swan Hills Treatment Centre (“SHTC”), located near the town of Swan Hills, is owned by the Province of Alberta (“Province”) and operated through a private contractor.
The SHTC is a fully integrated world class hazardous waste treatment and disposal facility. It plays a vital role by handling virtually all types of hazardous waste from across the country and is the only facility in Canada authorized to process and treat high-concentration PCBs.
The Province wants to optimize the SHTC’s revenues and reduce operational costs, enhance the role of the SHTC within the Province’s overall waste management strategy, and align the facility with future waste management trends; both in Canada and globally.
As a result the Province is seeking input from the hazardous waste industry which may be used to inform the Province for possible further steps that could shape the future direction of the SHTC and facilitate opportunities for private sector involvement.
